Chasing their goals
The goals — finish the 2020 season with a winning record and win a district title — were set by the New Hampton baseball team after a very unlike-Chickasaw 2-6 start to the season.
And so here’s where we’re at: Win a district title this week and New Hampton will be assured a winning record.
The Chickasaws’ rebound took a bit of a hit last week as Waverly-Shell Rock clinched the Northeast Iowa Conference title with a doubleheader sweep Tuesday, but an impressive 8-0 win over Top of Iowa Conference West Division champion Lake Mills Wednesday gave New Hampton a 9-9 regular season record.
“I feel like we’re taking another step in the right direction every day,” said senior pitcher Austin Hemann, who tossed a complete game one-hitter against the Bulldogs in what became the regular season finale after Thursday night’s game with Wapsie Valley was canceled after storms moved through the area. “We’re not there yet. We still have those times we shoot ourselves in the foot, but we’re definitely getting there.”
Save for dropping that doubleheader against the Go-Hawks, New Hampton went 7-1 down the stretch, and quite honestly, the Chickasaws probably should have won the opener against Waverly-Shell Rock.
