Betty J. Smith dies at 94
Betty J. Smith, age 94, of Mason City, formerly of New Hampton, died on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017 at Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 at Conway-Markham Funeral Chapel in New Hampton with Pastor Paul Pickar officiating. Burial will be in New Hampton Cemetery at New Hampton.
Visitation will be held from 9 to10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton.
Betty Jean Smith was born on August 3, 1923 in Oskaloosa, to William C. and Jennie (VanderLinden) Hartman. She was a 1941 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. Betty was united in marriage to Delbert C. Smith on April 17, 1942. He preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 2000. She was employed as a bookkeeper with Remakel & Felderman Construction in Bellevue, Iowa and with the United Telephone Company in Bellevue and later in New Hampton for 13 years. She retired in 1985. She volunteered at church, Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton and the Chickasaw Event Centre “Senior Center”. Betty was a member of the American legion Auxiliary and the Congregational United Church of Christ in Ionia.
Betty is survived by one daughter, Claudia Hopkey of Mason City; five grandchildren Andrea Hopkey of Atlanta, Alisa (Lee) Schutle and Brenda (Chad) Meyerhoff all of Waterloo and Chad Smith of Houston; five great grandchildren; sister Dolly (Don) Dye of University Park; one sister-in-law Fairy Hartman of Oskaloosa Ga; many nieces and nephews and special friends.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents William and Jennie Hartman; husband Delbert; son Larry in 2000; one sister Dorothy; three brothers William Jr., Jack and Roger; one granddaughter; one great granddaughter and one son-in-law.
