Back to state!
Going to the state tourney for the first time in school history was a great accomplishment for Turkey Valley’s girls last year, but going back for the second straight year may even be better. After the regional final 47-33 win over AGWSR Monday night, Shelby Reicks, bruised and clutching an ice bag delivered by her father for her latest injury, talked about the win. “Knowing you made it to state two times in a row is definitely a great feeling,” she said. “We made history by going last year and now we’re making history again.” Reicks has made an unfortunate habit of going down hard at least once a game. Monday she got up and put a game-high 20 points on the board, but the game was not determined early by any means. Turkey Valley only shot one 3-pointer for the game and it came in the second quarter as Kayla Gebel gave the Trojans a 13-6 lead with the basket, but by the half the Cougars trimmed the lead to 15-11. “Their 1-3-1 defense was better than we anticipated,” said Reicks. The Cougars were a big threat from 3-point range as they lead Class 1A in the number of long shot made at 151. For the full story, please see the Feb. 24 Tribune.
