Allan Peters, age 72 of New Hampton, died Thursday, April 30, 2020, at his home.

Alan Peters was born on Aug. 22, 1947, at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton, and he was one of six children raised by Virgil and Sally (Hackman) Peters.
At an early age, Alan discovered the joys of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing — two passions that remained with him throughout his life.
He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1965 and took a job at Oliver Tractor in Charles City where he completed his journeyman tool-and-die requirements and worked there until the plant closed in 1993.
One of the best decisions Alan ever made was to go to a dance in Lawler one night in the early 1970s, for it was there that he met Cindy Gott, who joked that she “had a perfectly good date until he showed up.” Alan impressed Cindy’s dad when he learned that his future son-in-law took out three pheasants with one shot, and Cindy’s mom was a big Alan fan from the start.
And eventually, so, too, was Cindy, and the couple exchanged vows on Dec. 14, 1974, which turned out to be brilliant planning on Alan’s part because eventually Dec. 14 would fall into Iowa’s “second deer season,” which saved him money on anniversary gifts.
Alan and Cindy had one son, Brian, who was born in 1979, and to say Dad was pumped to have a boy in the house would be an understatement; in fact, Brian went ice fishing with his parents when he was just 3 months old.
He may not remember that particular fishing trip, but Brian can tell you that his dad, when not working, was always there, teaching him the joys of hunting and fishing. And that father-son bond lasted right up to the very end.
When the tractor plant in Charles City closed, Alan worked at several jobs, including at Beatrice in Fredericksburg, but he eventually decided to be his own boss and started “Lasting Memories,” a company that poured foundations for gravestones and memorials.
He enjoyed playing cards and, even though he wasn’t the greatest dancer, he knew Cindy loved to dance so he did his best. But mostly, he’ll be remembered as an outdoorsman. He loved to fish with his son and his friends, especially Paul Heried, and it was always a good day when he could hang out with Roger at the bait shop in Frederika.
Alan joked a long time ago that he’d never win an argument with Cindy, and he probably didn’t. But they were married for 45 1/2 years, and Cindy, along with Brian and Al’s friends, will miss him dearly, but they are also comforted by the fact that as an organ donor, Alan will continue to provide joy to the lives of others.
Allan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cindy Peters of New Hampton; one son, Brian (Rachel) Peters of Frederika; two brothers, Frank Peters of New Hampton, and Donnie Peters of New Hampton; and two sisters, Helen (Tom) Dockendorf of New Hampton, and Pat (Don) Johnson of New Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dean Peters.
