Building up a streak
It might have been its ugliest win of the winning streak, but Cory McDonald believes Saturday’s 10-3 win over North Fayette Valley showed something about his team.
“We had that big inning in the fifth, and you know what? All three of our seniors — Aden [Zwanziger], Noah [Fye] and Joshua [Fenske] had big hits in that thing,” McDonald said after his team ran its winning streak to seven, thanks in large part to that seven-run fifth inning. “That’s what we’ve come to expect from our seniors. They need to lead by example, and they’ve been doing that lately.”
The win over the TigerHawks came two days after the Chickasaws blew out Turkey Valley 14-1 and a day after they improved to 3-0 in the Northeast Iowa Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Crestwood.
And while the win over North Fayette Valley wasn’t exactly pretty — the TigerHawks hung in there with New Hampton and the Chickasaws were sloppy in the field at times — McDonald played with plenty of grit.
“You’re not going to play perfect baseball every time out, that’s just a fact,” he said, “but our guys found a way to get it done and the one constant today was Max Babcock. He didn’t let anything fluster him and kept us in the game.”
The junior right-hander went six innings, scattered six hits, walked just one and struck out five to improve to 2-0.
